Inova Health System (Falls Church, Va.) is planning a $1 billion medical campus on the site of the vacant Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Va., according to an article in The Washington Post.

Plans call for the former mall site to be turned into a mixed-use, walkable urban village with medical, retail, and residential services. The development will also feature a central plaza, parks and public spaces, and a transit hub.

Inova’s new Inova Alexandria Hospital will be one of three Level II trauma centers in Northern Virginia and will include an emergency department, private patient rooms, and the Inova Schar Cancer Institute at Alexandria Hospital, which will offer comprehensive cancer services. A medical office building with an estimated 50 specialty physicians is also planned.

Construction could begin as soon as 2023, with the first buildings ready in 2025, according to an Inova press release.
