The two team stations are visible to all patients being treated and their visitors. The team stations are designed to be a convenient hub for staff and feature large-scale art and warm natural tones to provide a comfortable and non-institutional atmosphere.

Patients and family members are greeted by warm wood tones and artwork in the lobby entrance. Comfortable seating and a small self-serve café are also provided nearby.

Each infusion bay has space for two patients and their visitors. Views to the garden, natural lighting, and interior design elements positively contribute to the comfort and healing process of the patient. Features such as a wood ceiling and cabinets along with soft colors provide an atmosphere of warmth and calmness.

The comfort and wellbeing of family and visitors was considered in the design of each infusion bay, including comfortable armchairs, end tables, bench seating, and folding chairs for larger groups that can easily be moved within the bay. Cabinetry is available to store personal belongings.

A variety of dimmable light sources and elements of nature, including the forest wall mural and cloud back-lit ceiling panels, were introduced in the linear accelerator room to provide positive focal points and distractions for patients during the treatment process.

Samaritan Health and The S/L/A/M Collaborative partnered to design a new cancer center that would renew its Watertown, N.Y., campus and deliver a sense of hope to patients and caregivers.
The $16 million Walker Center for Cancer Care at Samaritan Health offers a state-of-the-art comprehensive and coordinated multidisciplinary care program to better serve north country New York cancer patients. The 22,000-square-foot facility brings medical oncology infusion and radiation oncology together, consolidating all practices within a centralized location.
The design promotes a welcoming, accessible, and healing environment. For example, the facility’s Mondrian-style exterior glazing pattern affords patients an abundance of natural light, while in the lobby the comforts of home are replicated with warm natural finishes and uplifting graphics.
