San Mateo County Health (San Mateo, Calif.) has completed a multiyear renovation of its medical center campus, according to a news release. The project, which began with a master plan in 2016, involved the construction and renovation of 200,000 square feet.
The project was initiated to address California’s Senate Bill 1953 seismic requirements for one of the campus’s older hospital buildings. The master plan, led by Taylor Design (San Francisco), which also served as the architect of record and interior designer on the project, outlined a phased renovation that included facility upgrades, a new 87,000-square-foot administration building, and enhanced hospital entrance called the “Link Building.”
The administration building features a contemporary workplace design with open sightlines, shared amenities, and a central staircase under a skylight to promote staff interaction and well-being.
The Link Building creates a unified entry to the campus, connecting the hospital and administrative offices, as well as providing access to a public café, gift shop, and services for health insurance support and billing assistance.
The campus design also incorporates community-focused elements, including green space, an exercise lawn, and public walking path. The building’s exterior, designed by Perkins&Will (San Francisco), uses composite wood paneling to reflect the natural landscape of San Mateo County. The project also features sculptural and graphic installations from Bay Area artists.
The project team also includes Truebeck Construction (general contractor; San Mateo, Calif.), Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (structural engineer; Oakland, Calif.), Interface Engineering (MEP engineer; Oakland, Calif.), and BKF Engineers (civil engineer; Oakland, Calif.).
