Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, Ala., the state’s only freestanding pediatric hospital, opened a new pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), according to a news release.

The new unit combines the existing PICU and special care units into a single critical care space, providing flexibility for both high- and low-acuity patients with complex medical needs.

Pool and Company Architects (Birmingham) served as the design firm on the project, and Hoar Construction (Homewood, Ala.) was the construction manager.
