A Prediction to Ponder

At an early morning plenary session at the recent ASHE PDC conference in Tampa, Florida, “To Build or Not To Build” panelist Brad Pollitt, vice president of facilities development at Shands HealthCare in Gainesville, Florida, boldly predicted that in the face of...

Fable Hospital 2.0

Despite deep and vocal disagreements over healthcare reform, virtually everyone believes that the current system is not economically sustainable. We are spending too much and getting too little in return. This recognition has spurred healthcare leaders to examine every aspect of hospital operations. But what about the healthcare building itself, the physical environment within which patient care occurs? Too often, cost-cutting discussions have overlooked the hospital structure.

Green business initiatives: Only a few years back, they were the purview of a few business owners with strong environmental leanings. Today, the story has changed.

Coming into focus: Connecting environmental stewardship and community benefit

Science, complemented with stories, can help us best message the connection between environmental health and overall wellness. The science can be found in journals like The Lancet. The stories, on the other hand, come from people. Stories can be captured through internal environmental rounds, employee and patient surveys, and community assessments. Kaiser Permanente and Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA) can help tell the story-the story of environmental stewardship and its connection to community benefit.

Getting it right the first time: A process-driven facility design approach at Virtua Health

Virtua Health's $325-million replacement hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey, is planned to be a state-of-the-art, 368-bed, 669,000-square-foot inpatient facility. Future inpatient growth is expected to accommodate 600 beds and a total of 1 million square feet. The expansion will be constructed in multiple phases. The goal of providing a sensitive healing environment will be met through the use of natural elements, intuitive wayfinding, and technology.

Creating calm: How one design team answered the complexities of neurology with a serene space

When New York City-based RHD Interior Design first took on the project of a new neurology office for Dr. Dexter Sun, President Rhona Hershkowitz says her tactic was to juxtapose the complexity of the medical specialty with a simple design approach to create a serene, calming environment for both patients and staff.

For the project, RHD teamed up with daSILVA Architects and general contractor Unity Construction Development, both also located in New York.

It's time to rethink healthcare real estate

Seton Hays MOB I in Kyle, Texas, is a four-story 96,829-square-foot medical office building attached to the Seton Medical Center-Hays. It opened in Spring 2010, and includes an ambulatory surgery center and medical office space.

The healthcare industry-and healthcare real estate-has changed dramatically during the past two years. The industry has been roiled by the financial crisis, the recession, the passage of healthcare reform, the growing trend toward employed physicians, the continuing shift toward outpatient care, and looming physician shortages.

Green design for better senior living

Highways or hallways

Webster's Dictionary defines a highway as a “main direct road.” So in healthcare for seniors, the corridors that link resident apartments to activity rooms, dining areas, and wellness offices, could then be considered the “highways” of the communities. And not only do...
