Last week a friend came to me for help with some paint selection. Although I normally get a bit annoyed when people associate the design profession with an innate ability to pick out the best shade of plum, I decided to help my friend out anyway. As my friend began to...

Going global
The economy is not the only thing that has been shrinking over these past few years. With the growing role that technology and the Internet play in our industry, the space between us and colleagues around the world seems to be shrinking as well. On a regular basis, we...

Innovation in The Frames of Evidence-Based Design Methods: Reflections on The Importance of Communication, Culture, and Context
The focus on the invisible part of evidence-based design (EBD) that almost contradicts the nature of its context made it difficult to write this article. But no visible results are possible without efforts made in terms of methods and process tools. During thousands of meetings for every building project, managers, administrators, designers, architects, healthcare professionals, engineers, and sometimes patients describe, discuss, and decide what will have an enormous impact on patient safety and satisfaction, staff productivity and satisfaction, and quality of care.

Hotel or Hospital-ity?

Centro de Cancer ABC MEXICO CITY, MEXICO
Mexico City's Centro de Cancer ABC (American British Cowdray Cancer Center) is a comprehensive oncology center that provides a new central location for many services that had previously been located throughout the campus.

Integrating information and communication technologies to support care delivery in the single-room ward environment
It's an exciting time for the Pebble Project's partner provider in the United Kingdom. Based in Kent, England, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells National Health Service Trust is a large acute hospital trust that provides services on behalf of the National Health Service (NHS) in England. The Trust currently has three main hospital sites, two of which will close next year following the January 2011 opening of its new 512-bed district general hospital development at Pembury, a village in Kent, England.
Global lessons in healthcare
Globally, buildings that support the delivery of healthcare services vary broadly by type-ranging from small community outpatient clinics to large acute-care hospitals-and have an equally broad range of owners-including philanthropic nonprofits, corporate entities, and governmental agencies. Healthcare is a significant service economy; while its percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) varies widely between nations, there is general agreement that the healthcare sector has the capacity to define markets through what it builds and purchases and how it operates.
Overseas Observations
Naturally, architecture, sustainability, and culturally driven design vary widely in healthcare facilities around the world; however, a number of commonalities still ring true from Melbourne, Australia, to Beijing to Tel Aviv, Israel, to London.
