In this final installment of a three-part discussion on research, I’ll share how pre-occupancy research tools were used to establish design criteria for an inpatient floor build-out at a major Midwestern hospital.

The field of regenerative medicine is still in its infancy, beginning around 1992, when researchers started experimenting with ways to encourage the human body to heal its own damaged tissues and organs.
This later led to exploration of biofabrication. Conceptually, this process of regenerative medicine is a form of 3-D printing that uses “bio-ink” to create new tissues, skin, and organs to solve a host of medical ailments.
Throughout history, pandemics—plague, small pox, and measles, among others—have caused millions of deaths. These were largely eradicated in developed countries by the 20th century, but strains such as HIV and now Ebola are continuing to kill thousands throughout the world, specifically affecting underdeveloped nations with weak healthcare systems.
