HEALTHCARE DESIGN Celebrates 10 Years
To celebrate our first 10 years, HEALTHCARE DESIGN published a special 10th anniversary supplement to the magazine that reflects on a decade of healthcare design. To read the digital version of the supplement, please click here.
Synchronicity for 2011-2012
This issue of HEALTHCARE DESIGN marks the 10th anniversary since its first publication. Ten years is a period wide enough to note significant shifts. How did those shifts actually occur? Which decisions led to our current reality, and what were the missed opportunities to link multiple events into more organized collaborations that could have delivered a different, more advanced reality? I could recall or dream of those events and write a historical perspective, but I would rather anticipate scenarios for the next 10 years. This is where synchronicity comes in.
Reflecting on a Decade
The November 2011 issue of HEALTHCARE DESIGN marks the 10th anniversary of the magazine’s first publication. The growth of the title—starting as a once-yearly publication and eventually growing to a whole media brand that encompasses a monthly publication, a major conference, website, and more—has been remarkable, especially in an era when the print medium has been rapidly eclipsed by electronic forms.
I Don’t Want an ‘Architect,’ I Want a ‘Relationship Builder’!
The role of the architect, the skill sets that are most rewarded, and the higher expectations of clients have all dramatically changed as the profession has transitioned from the practice of architecture to the business of architecture.
The 'Queen of Green'
In 2016, Sweden will be home to a new hospital that will be a place of firsts. Based on the slogan “The Patient First,” the New Karolinska (NKS) will replace the existing Karolinska University Hospital in the Solna suburb of Stockholm. The goal of the new medical facility is to create an environment that supports truly translational medicine, i.e., an approach to healthcare that fosters strong ties between research, education, and professional practice.

Dual Design
The team at Puchlik Design Associates of Pasadena, California, was faced with a unique objective when it was brought on to design the Spine Institute and Orthopedic Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center in Glendale, California.
Ten-Plus Years (And as Many Analogies) in Healthcare Sustainability
A journey, a path, a garden, a book—these are all words commonly used to analogize the progression toward environmental excellence. Whatever the vehicle used to get there, the path taken is composed of increments (rungs, steps, chapters, ingredients). This column will highlight some of the signposts our sector has planted along the way (hard to avoid that road theme) as well as two health systems—Kaiser Permanente (see a PDF of Kaiser Permanente's Road to Sustainability at the bottom of this page) and
My firm, Aesthetics Inc., has been involved with various aspects of the design of children’s hospitals for more than 20 years. When we recently were privileged to work with Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota on a major expansion project, we had the opportunity to participate with—and learn from—visionary leaders during a project I believe has much to teach us all. As a professional editor who has worked on a variety of national publications over the years, I’ve ended up on a lot of email lists … a lot. So when I was shuffling through my Inbox the other day, I wasn’t all that surprised to receive a press release announcing the opening of a new home improvement store, despite it not having all that much to do with my current role on a healthcare building magazine. KLMK Group Inc. has recently undergone a corporate reorganization. At the end of last year, the firm joined forces with Azalea Capital to leverage internal resources, strengthen its service platform, and expand its geographic footprint. The new internal structure will align resources focused on business growth, strategic opportunities, and client commitment.
