2014 Corporate Rankings Survey: Deadline Extended

As the healthcare design industry continues to transition in response to the shifts taking place in healthcare overall, while exploring new lines of business and ways to bring more value to the table for clients, Healthcare Design is asking firms to report how business progressed in 2013 and shed light on some of the trends that emerged.

Starting Point: First Steps To Supporting Wellness By Design

Planning healthcare campuses to promote health and wellness requires a new approach to the way this process has traditionally been done.

Rather than creating hospitals as towering structures set apart from communities and surrounded by a sea of parking lots, modern updates to the model make facilities centerpieces to wellness-oriented communities, inspiring wellness not only by providing healthcare services but by collaborating with other service providers from health centers to retailers to restaurants that all support healthy lifestyles.

Designing For Wellness: The Healthcare Campus Of The Future

The idea that the built environment can have a positive effect on health outcomes is a generally accepted truth today. Research has proven the benefits of providing natural light and views to nature, configuring spaces to prevent falls, and more.

But what about the community outside a hospital’s walls? What effect can a healthcare campus have on the health and wellness of its surrounding area?

Aging medical facilities at a pair of U.S. Air Force bases in the Southeast will be replaced over the next three years, delivering the military’s world-class healthcare to the servicemen and women, and their families, who are stationed there.

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C., will receive a new 107,000-square-foot medical clinic to replace an existing 50-year-old facility. The $60 million center will serve 18 different clinical disciplines within the new space.

Weighing The Options For Data Center Projects

Healthcare is in the midst of a transformation to an increasingly technology-driven industry–an industry that's only going to become even more dependent on data and information technology, said Hamilton Espinosa, healthcare core market leader at DPR Construction.

That push is coming from three different directions: integration of technology and systems, adoption of electronic health records, and exploration of population health management, Espinosa shared during the session "Convergence of IT in Healthcare: One Size Does Not Fit All" at the

American Hospital Association Offers Perspective On Healthcare Reform Future

With an industry-wide focus on patient safety, electronic medical records, strategic alliances, new efficiencies, and more, Richard Pollack, executive vice president of advocacy and public policy for the American Hospital Association (AHA), said that those working in the healthcare industry have the opportunity to change the way care is delivered for generations to come.

"Our field is on the edge of a revolution," Pollack told the attendees of the ASHE PDC Summit in Orlando.

Pollack was on hand for a plenary sessi

Comprehensive Functional Programs Allow Form To Follow Function

For some working in the world of healthcare planning, design, and construction, the definition of "putting the cart before the horse" is building a new facility without first creating a functional program.

Exploring the merits of allowing form to follow function, a multidisciplinary panel spoke on the topic at the ASHE PDC Summit in Orlando during the plenary session "FGI Guidelines: Maximizing the Benefit of the Functional Program." While the Facility Guidelines Institute provides minimum standards for the practice, Ken Cates, principa

The Next Generation Of Kaiser Permanente's Small Hospital, Big Idea

After an 11-month evaluation process, in 2011 Kaiser Permanente chose the winners of its Small Hospital, Big Idea Competition, recognizing Aditazz and M+NLB/Perkins+Will for their combined approach to the challenge of creating a design concept for a small, eco-conscious, high-tech, and patient- and family-friendly hospital.

Three years later, the team behind the winning project and representatives from Kaiser Permanente were on hand at the ASHE PDC Summit in Orlando to share where those big ideas are today in the session "Kaiser's Small Hospital, Big Id

Designing Healthcare Spaces For IT Systems Integration

Technology is becoming as inherent to the delivery of healthcare as diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Whether building a new facility or renovating an old space, it’s likely that every project on design boards today will require plenty of thought for information technology (IT) and integration of all the systems that continue to be adopted to support the continuum of care.
