PHOTO TOUR: Mudgil Practices

A minimal design by The UP Studio (Long Island City, N.Y.) creates a unique identity for Mudgil Practices, a new joint dermatology and dentistry practice located in Hicksville, N.Y. Welcoming patients since spring 2016, the office includes a dermatology zone, a dentistry zone, mini- and full-sized testing laboratories, shared and private offices for each practice, and a shared waiting area for patients.

PHOTO TOUR: Seeds of Innocence, New Delhi, India

The new Seeds of Innocence fertility clinic in New Delhi, India (part of the Yashoda Group of Hospitals), was designed by Studio An-V-Thot Architects Pvt. Ltd. (New Delhi) and completed in March 2016. The building’s striking exterior features Marsala wine-colored lacquered panels that reflect the sky; a backlit, perforated box in the center of the front wall is clad with sheet metal and demarcates the critical zones within from the other areas of the clinic. The mezzanine floor visually divides the building into two, separating the upper floors from the ground floor.

Showcase 2016: U. of Arizona Cancer Center, Award of Merit

The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (Phoenix), winner of an Award of Merit in the 2016 Healthcare Design Showcase, opened in June 2015—but it almost didn’t happen at all. The architect, ZGF Architects LLP (Los Angeles), explained in its submission that as the project neared design completion, a falling economy put stress on the project funding plan.

PHOTO TOUR: Southern Jersey Family Medical Center

Since 2009, Southern Jersey Family Medical Center (SJFMC) has occupied 6,000 square feet within an existing two-story building along High Street in Burlington, N.J.  In 2013, SJFMC had the opportunity to purchase the entire building of approximately 20,000 square feet; it asked its original architect and interior design firm, MPM Studio LLC, to develop the expansion.

Questioning The Trends

A busy travel schedule over the past month allowed me the opportunity to sit down with multiple groups of architects, designers, and providers in person. I love these conversations, because for whatever reason, the participants don’t seem to hold back (professional competitiveness be damned). And I always walk away with new insights, which sometimes call into question the concept of “trends.”

Merrifield Center Brings Behavioral Healthcare Under One Roof

Separating service lines and population types is a common practice in behavioral healthcare for a number of reasons: safety and privacy concerns, differing treatment approaches, and a concerted effort to avoid institutional-feeling, big-box environments among them. Yet almost a decade ago, Fairfax County, Va., decided to bring its far-flung behavioral services under one roof. Cost-saving demands—as they do with everything relating to facility planning and growth these days—played a big role in this decision. But it was more than that.

PHOTO TOUR: Downtown Women OB/GYN

Founded in the 1970s, Downtown Women OB/GYN (DTW) was one of the first practices in Manhattan specifically committed to providing healthcare for women, by women. In 1987 DTW moved from a small office on lower Fifth Avenue to a third-floor, 2,500-square-foot loft space in a 19th century factory building in SoHo, a neighborhood that had yet to become the trendy art and shopping district it is today.

PHOTO TOUR: Medical Dermatology Associates

Built into a timber loft in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, Medical Dermatology Associates is a 5,500-square-foot medical clinic for a newly formed medical practice. The partners wanted to dramatically improve patient experience, and the designers from Woodhouse Tinucci Architects (Chicago) tried to do so by exploring a series of material and circulation layers within the design. Spaces are layered sequentially from public to private, creating separate and efficient circulation loops for patients and doctors.
