The Inside Story: Lessons From IIDA’s Healthcare Interior Winners
One’s a large hospital in the heart of a treasured, vibrant American city. Another’s a tony ambulatory center that embraces its serene California surroundings. There’s a bright and graphically bold cancer center in one of the rainiest regions of the U.S. and a 16-story hospital nestled in the mountains of China. Some facilities are modern and angular, while others are homey with subdued, enveloping palettes. They range in services from pediatrics to specialty care, from wellness to emergency, and everything in between.
PHOTO TOUR: Hardin Memorial Hospital North Tower Expansion
Hardin Memorial Hospital (HMH) is a county-owned facility in Elizabethtown, Ky. Its oldest section was built in 1954, with numerous additions and renovations. Of its 300 inpatient beds, fewer than 50 percent were private rooms, and its most recent “new” patient rooms were constructed 30 years ago. Thus, HMH wanted to improve its inpatient care by increasing the number of private rooms as well as providing modern, patient-centered accommodations.

The Next Ebola Is Coming: Are Facilities Prepared?
Americans “have a very short attention span,” warned Dr. Bruce Ribner, medical director of the Emory University Hospital Serious Communicable Diseases Unit, during a Capitol Hill briefing in early October. As the editor of a magazine that’s constantly on the lookout for what’s next, I have to admit, he’s got a point. When the Ebola epidemic hit the States, we were very focused on creating and sharing content on containment units and other design strategies for infection control.

Developer/owner Meridian opened a newly renovated 69,000-square-foot medical facility in Rohnert Park, Calif., in August 2015. The city of Rohnert Park is located approximately 50 miles north of San Francisco and was in need of more healthcare service providers, with only 1.29 doctors per 1,000 residences, far below the national average of 2.4 doctors per 1,000 residences. Meridian bought the two-story building in March 2014, which was built in 1973 and only 50 percent occupied at the time of the sale.
