The new Scripps Critical Care Building, designed by Perkins+Will, was completed in September 2014 to serve residents of the seaside community of Encinitas, Calif. The project consists of a new, two-story critical care building and central energy plant, connected to and serving an existing 150-bed community hospital.
What Makes Someone Worthy Of An HCD 10 Honor?
When we launched The HCD 10 awards three years ago, the goal was to give attention to the diverse range of professionals who contribute to the design process—and to do so in a targeted way, distinguishing 10 different areas of expertise from which to choose our winners. The fine-tuning process is continual; each year, we’ve reconsidered and tweaked our categories, revised our submission form, and debated the judging criteria. We probably always will.

Dr. Carolyn PoonWoo and the designers, Bruce Stratton and Stephanie Kamburis of Southside Design, wanted to create a calm, welcoming, and technologically-advanced dental office. An existing one-story building with a basement was purchased by the client and completely renovated. The facility includes five operatories for a variety of dental procedures, as well as six hygiene rooms.
