This project for Indiana University Health in downtown Indianapolis is a transformative hospital set to redefine patient care across Indiana. Anchoring a 44-acre academic medical campus, the 2-million-square-foot facility consolidates Methodist and University hospitals into a single, state-of-the-art destination for acute adult care. CURIS Design—a joint venture between BSA, CSO, and RATIO—is leading the healthcare planning and design efforts, focusing on patient-centered innovation and clinical efficiency.
At the heart of the hospital’s design are 864 same-handed patient rooms, all single-occupancy and 300 square feet, promoting safety, standardization, and enhanced caregiver workflow. Each room includes dedicated family zones, improved visibility with sliding glass doors, and access to natural light—elements proven to support healing. The facility will also house 50 advanced operating rooms and 380 outpatient exam rooms, streamlining care delivery across specialties.
Built for longevity and adaptability, the 16-story hospital features modular planning to accommodate future advancements in medical technology. Three interconnected towers with rooftop helipads and enclosed walkways support efficient movement for staff, patients, and families. The design integrates LEED Gold-targeted sustainability strategies, including stormwater eco-parks, EPA Energy Star-rated systems, and resilient infrastructure.
As one of the nation’s largest healthcare construction projects, the hospital is also a model of economic inclusion—channeling nearly $400 million into locally owned, minority-, women-, and veteran-led businesses. Scheduled to open in 2027, this hospital will be a national benchmark in healthcare design, delivering compassionate, future-ready care for generations to come.
