Levine Cancer Institute Expansion
Levine Cancer Institute (Charlotte, N.C.) is the world’s first multi-site cancer center to be certified by the Planetree Organization. The Institute’s mission is to provide a comforting experience for patients, families, and caregivers as they journey toward healing. To achieve innovations in the overall experience, the team conducted interactive patient experience workshops in collaboration with the Patient/Family Advisory Council. By tracking the path of patients, caregivers and staff, the design team was able to identify 12 primary “touch points” throughout the building. The touch points spurred the adoption of the design’s guiding principles: celebrating interaction, supporting the journey, providing holistic care, and honoring mind-body-spirit. These principles manifest in unique experiences such as an interfaith chapel near the main entry, centralized lab and registration to simplify patient flow, improved dining facilities, infusion bays with vegetative roof views and natural light throughout.
