Regional Health’s Orthopedic Specialty Hospital + Sports Performance Institute (Rapid City, S.D.) is a spin-off project from the system’s initial Rapid City Hospital expansion and renovation project. The owner wanted to expand the existing surgery platforms for orthopedics, but ultimately decided a freestanding specialty hospital focused on orthopedics and wellness would be more convenient to their patients. Establishment of a clear divide between the hospital and outpatient services, incorporation of Lean design, occupancy separations and shared services allowed both the inpatient hospital and outpatient center to be constructed within a manageable budget. A  time-savings and flexibility measure was utilization of standardized pre-fabricated millwork for nurse stations and cabinetry.

The two-story lobby, filled with natural light, provides easy access to registration areas, a lounge, retail spaces and a bistro with an adjacent outdoor dining area. Other amenities include an outdoor fitness and agility training area and walking track, as well as a sports retail center.

Complementing the architecture of Regional Health’s main hospital campus, the exterior blends local vernacular style with more modern elements. Vertical and horizontal components represent natural elements found in the region, like the Black Hills, Badlands and prairies. Core materials of glass, stone, masonry and metal, as well as outdoor gardens for dining and respite establish a connection to nature.

As the center’s role is to encourage and restore physical achievement, the interior design incorporates bright colors and graphics to inspire energy.

The building is designed for easy horizontal expansion of surgery, inpatient beds and pre- and post-procedural areas.
