The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) announced the winners of the 2017 Healthcare Interior Design Competition, which recognizes outstanding originality and excellence in the design and furnishings of healthcare interior spaces. “Commercial interior designers play a critical role in the healthcare industry, providing evidence-based solutions that contribute to positive patient outcomes and the well-being of caregivers and healthcare employees,” IIDA executive vice president and CEO Cheryl S. Durst said in a release. “This year’s winners exemplify exceptional healthcare design that puts patients and their caregivers at ease while creating positive healing environments.”

This year’s Best of Competition winner is EwingCole for the Brandywine Valley Specialty Care and Ambulatory Surgery Center in Glen Mills, Pa. This year’s competition also featured the first-ever Transformation and Innovation Award, which recognizes a project that is leading the industry and advancing healthcare outcomes. Parra-Müller Arquitectura de Maternidades in Madrid, Spain, was presented with the Transformation and Innovation Award for the Natural Birth Unit at University Hospital HM Nuevo Belén project in Madrid, Spain. The jury panel reviewing this year’s competition included Carol Doering, IIDA, AAHID, CID, LEED AP, healthcare lead, IA Interior Architects; Lisa Herriott, IIDA, LEED AP ID+C, interior designer, project manager, UW Medicine | Harborview Medical Center; and Tiana Lemons, IIDA, NCIDQ, EDAC, healthcare studio leader, Orcutt|Winslow.
