Bon Secours Health (Richmond, Va.) held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on a new critical care tower at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, according to richmondbizsense.com.

The $306 million tower is part of a larger $370 million project that will also comprise renovations of the main hospital building, including a remodeled main entrance and new drop-off area.

The 8-story, 200-square-foot tower will house six operating rooms (ORs) and 44 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, including a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and cardiac and neurology ICUs. The top two floors of the building will house more than 20,000 square feet of shell space for future expansion.

Existing critical care services as well as the hospital’s helipad will be relocated from the main hospital building to the new tower. Pedestrian bridges are planned on several levels to connect the new tower to the hospital.
