Nonprofit health system ECU Health (Greenville, N.C.) announced a $220 million capital proposal to open a new hospital in Williamston, N.C., and expand its hospital campus in Beaufort, S.C., according to the website beckershospitalreview.
Specifically, the health system seeks to convert the former Martin General Hospital in Williamston into a rural emergency hospital. The 49-bed hospital closed in August 2023 due to financial challenges.
While the initial reopening would use Martin General’s existing facility, ECU Health said it would request $70 million in state funding to build a permanent facility with space to add more outpatient services, according to beckershospitalreview.
If approved, the reopening is planned for August 2028, according to the website wtin.com.
The nonprofit system is also seeking $150 million to expand inpatient capacity at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital in Washington, N.C. The proposal is under review by the Martin County (N.C.) Board of Commissioners.
