M Health Fairview’s St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, Minn., opened a 16-bed observation unit on its campus.

Interdisciplinary design firm HGA (Minneapolis) and construction firm The Boldt Company delivered the project using a prefabricated modular design process.

The structure was manufactured to 90 percent completion in Boldt’s Oshkosh, Wis., facility, and then transported after completion to the hospital campus, where the site and foundations had been prepared.

St. John’s Hospital continued to deliver care until the final on-site installation of the new unit, which took place in three days. The unit’s flexible design will allow the hospital to repurpose the unit in the future as needs change.
