The 162,000-square-foot expansion added ED and ICU beds, six trauma rooms, and a secure and dedicated behavioral health space.

Mercy Hospital Fort Smith in Fort Smith, Ark., has completed a $185 million expansion, according to a news release from McCarthy Building Company (St. Louis), the builder on the project.

The 5-story, 162,000-square-foot addition expands the hospital’s emergency department (ED) from 29 to 50 beds, adds six trauma rooms, and increases intensive care unit (ICU) beds from 36 to 64.

The new ED also houses dedicated spaces for infectious disease treatment and a secure, five-room area for behavioral health.

As part of the project, a 22-bed observation unit replaced the former ICU space, which required no renovation. Infrastructure improvements included an expanded central utility plant and upgrades to the parking decks and helipad.

The project team includes HKS Architects (architecture and structural design; Dallas), Olsson Associates (civil engineer; Lincoln, Neb.), and Enfra Solutions (mechanical, plumbing, electrical and fire protection engineer; Metairie, La.).
