Harbor-UCLA Medical Center held a topping-out ceremony to celebrate reaching a construction milestone as the final piece of structural steel was placed on its new inpatient tower in Los Angeles, according to a news release from HMC Architects (Los Angeles), which is part of the design-build team on the project.
The 9-story, 545,000-square-foot expansion will house 347 patient beds, including 44 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 200 medical-surgical beds, 20 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) beds, and 36 mental health beds.
The centerpiece of the medical center’s 1.3-million-square-foot campus redevelopment, the new tower is also part of a Level 1 trauma center and is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification for environmental sustainability.
The design-build team on the project will also include Hensel Phelps (Greeley, Colo.) and CO Architects (Los Angeles).
