University of Texas Health Science Center (UT Health) has set up an alternate care site for COVID-19 patients in the parking lot of its campus in Laredo, Texas, according to an article in KGNS.tv.

The site features a 40-by-132-foot medical tent housing 30 beds, five toilets, and three showers. Each patient care area has a bed, oxygen tank, and table.

The aim of the site is to free up space at area hospitals and reduce the need to transport patients elsewhere in Texas for care, according to a UT Health press release. The site is operated by AshBritt (Austin, Texas), a rapid-response emergency management and logistics contractor, in partnership with disaster management firm IEM Medical (Research Triangle Park, N.C.).

The project is expected to be operational for 30 to 60 days, according to the release.
