Zaha Hadid Architects (London) has been selected in an international competition to design the Malpensa Hospital (Grande Ospedale della Malpensa) in Lombardy, Italy, according to a news release.
The project comprises a nearly 970,000-square-foot medical campus to replace and consolidate services from Gallarate Hospital and Busto Arsizio Hospital into a single facility.
A 5-story tower will house emergency, surgical, and critical care services with radiology, interventional, and diagnostic rooms. The first and second floors of the facility will accommodate specialty clinics such as maternal-infant care, rehabilitation, laboratory services, and logistics.
Gardens, courtyards, and landscaped rooftop terraces are planned to offer a variety of rehabilitation and respite spaces on the site, which is surrounded by forests and agricultural land.
The project team includes RINA (developer, team leader; Genoa, Italy) and engineering firms Studio Plicchi (Bologna, Italy), WSP (Rome, Italy), STI Engineering (Cortona, Italy), and BC Building Consulting (Naples, Italy).
