Augusta Health Outpatient Pavilion, Fishersville, Virginia

Recognizing a growing demand for access to outpatient care, Augusta Health (Fishersville, Va.) set out to add a new 60,000-square-foot outpatient pavilion on the edge of its existing campus.

Opened in February 2023, the facility brings together imaging, surgical, and breast care in one location, establishing a framework for expanding its community-based services on and off its campus.

Healthcare rebranding at new clinic

Working with CannonDesign (Buffalo, N.Y.), the architect and interior designer on the project, the destination care center is one of the first to reflect the health system’s renewed brand identity and commitment to new care models.

The outpatient pavilion is designed to create a new modern image for Augusta’s campus and set the tone for future projects. The project delivers a contemporary building with separate entrances and a consistent aesthetic throughout.

Entrances for each outpatient modality, such as the breast center, surgery center and imaging center, mark the individual specialties and are positioned in corners of the building.

These distinctions allow the building to curve to the contours of the site and the corner of the property, opening views into and out of the facility. Two-story waiting rooms with large windows that allow light and views of the landscape are a common thread in each building.

Hospitality-inspired interior design

Wood-toned metal aluminum canopies identify the entrances while establishing a unified look and feel across the building.

A cascading garden is designed as part of the overall pavilion, which fills the space between the new outpatient facility and the existing hospital, creating a respite destination for the entire campus.

The interiors feature a hospitality look and feel that’s able to withstand healthcare’s cleaning and infection control standards. For example, the breast health portion of the building incorporates wood and glass screens with soft floral patterns to create smaller intimate waiting spaces.

The lighting includes specialty pendant lighting, creating the feeling of a hotel waiting space within the clinic

The furniture and finishes throughout the building, including warm woods and lantern lighting, have a timeless feel. The style and sizes of seating allow for group seating or patients to have alone time.

Different textures are layered throughout the interior, with much of the artwork reflecting nature and the surrounding environment.
