Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute, Cleveland

Cleveland Clinic’s new 1 million-square-foot Neurological Institute will provide comprehensive neurological care including diagnostic imaging, surgery, and inpatient and outpatient services when it opens in January 2027.

The project will expand the physical infrastructure dedicated to neurological care on the organization’s main campus and consolidate inpatient and outpatient care services under one roof. The facility will house 218 inpatient rooms, 120 outpatient exam rooms, 36 neurological intensive care unit (NICU) beds and 12 operating rooms (ORs) initially. Imaging, infusion, surgical services, and research labs will also be offered.

Prioritizing flexible design

The project team, including Cleveland Clinic’s Buildings + Design, Hopkins Architects (design architect; London), and Stantec (architect of record, Cleveland), prioritized efficiency and flexibility in the facility layout.

Floors are divided into typical quadrants and modular units to adapt to the needs of distinct service lines while maintaining uniformity throughout. For example, rooms in the clinical model are a uniform size (140 square feet) but offer flexibility to choose to include or exclude a sink, such as in for behavioral health units where a sink could present a safety hazard. Multiple furniture setups and layouts are also available.

Additionally, assessment spaces for functions such as gait and balance, cognition, and voice pattern analysis are included in the building to facilitate data-driven personalization of treatment plans and research, including a dedicated Assessment Center to measure specific neurological functions as part of routine care.

Design strategies to reduce stress

To create a sense of calm and to help reduce anxiety, the building is filled with light and is intuitive to navigate. For example, most of the public outpatient corridors have full-height windows at the end of the corridors so the patients can orient themselves.

Natural light is brought into the center of the floor via perimeter corridors, clerestories, and full-height glazing in the inpatient rooms.
