Cleveland Clinic – The Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion at Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland
The new 150,000-square-foot Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion at Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute in Cleveland is the first part of a multiphase project that will allow the Cleveland Clinic to deliver exceptional patient experience in a leading-edge eye care, research, and education facility.
Demand for eye care services
Responding to an increased demand for eye care services and surgeries, the addition features an ophthalmic surgical center with eight operating rooms, three refractive surgery procedure rooms, and 60 outpatient exam rooms.
It also provides clinical, diagnostic, and surgical services for a range of eye diseases. The addition of the new, four-story outpatient facility allowed the clinical practices at Cole Eye Institute to remain operational throughout construction.
The expansion strengthens the architectural presence along the northern edge of the east-west green corridor at the heart of campus and enhances connectivity to nature. The design includes stone facades inlaid with locally quarried Indiana limestone to connect the project to its context.
Inside the Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion
Inside, clinic spaces are arranged to optimize wayfinding, with an open layout flooded with natural light and views of surrounding green space, for an intuitive and stress-free experience. Administrative offices, as well as spaces for education and research, are also housed within the building.
Upon arrival, visitors enter a 3-story atrium that connects new and existing spaces, featuring bridges that float perpendicular across the open atrium and two monumental stairs with recessed handrails.
A multicolored glass sculpture projects light and color into the atrium. The result is a design that elevates the interplay of light and shadow, a fitting architectural language for a clinic dedicated to vision care.
“A glass ceiling in the lobby brings natural light into the space, creating a bright and welcoming environment,” said Bryce Hubertz, senior project designer with HGA. “The interplay of light and shadow aids patients with low vision by increasing contrast and minimizing glare, facilitating smoother navigation and improved object recognition. The multicolored glass sculpture enhances this experience, animating the surfaces with color.”
