Hofstra University Science and Innovation Center, Hempstead, New York

Hofstra University (Hempstead, N.Y.) set out to create a hub for biomedical science and innovation that unites its Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies (SON) and the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS).

The new Science and Innovation Center comprises a 75,000-square-foot, U-shaped building that shares a courtyard with the adjacent Zarb School of Business. The layout forms an active common space that brings the campus community together.

Inside, the colocation strategy for the two disciplines is designed to encourage both practice-specific and cross-functional learning opportunities. For example, nursing students can learn how to prototype medical devices in the engineering school’s maker space, while engineering students can use the nursing school’s laboratories to explore using virtual reality (VR) technology and big data in a healthcare setting.

Special attention was also given to student well-being in the design, with abundant glazing providing access to daylight and roof terraces that serve as public amenity spaces. Additionally, a prominent 4-story interactive staircase supporting areas for social collaboration while encouraging students to integrate exercise into their day.
