Hospice Care and Community Center, Cleveland
Hospice of the Western Reserve (Cleveland), a provider of end-of-life palliative care, caregiver support, and bereavement services, chose a lakefront setting for its new Hospice Care and Community Center.
Scheduled to open in 2025, the center will provide critical services, create a more efficient care environment, and support the evolving healthcare needs of Northern Ohio.
Prioritizing a homelike design for hospice care
Designed by architecture and interior design firm E4H Environments for Health Architecture (Williston Vt.), the facility will replace the existing Hospice House on the adjacent property, which has served the community for nearly 30 years.
The design of the new building seeks to create a sense of home, using features such as gable roofs, residential-style windows, and outdoor porches/patios. On the exterior, clapboard siding, wood elements on the porte-cochere and porches, and a stone base will further support the residential feel.
Interior design strategies
The 54,700-square-foot hospice facility will feature 32 private patient rooms with serene views of Lake Erie, enhanced family spaces, and innovative technology tailored to the complexities of end-of-life care, such as hidden medical gas outlets and bedside controls for room amenities.
Additional spaces for families include overnight accommodations, exterior patio and courtyard spaces for quiet contemplation (or celebrations of life), and a children’s courtyard with safe play areas.
The facility will also include a community center dedicated to bereavement support and activities for patients and their families.
