PHOTO TOUR: UC Davis Children’s Surgery Center
The UC Davis Children’s Surgery Center at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif., is part of a multiphase seismic compliance master plan for the hospital. The 20,000-square-foot center was designed by HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA) and holds a check-in area, staff breakroom, administration offices, and a waiting room on the second floor, and prep/recovery bays and six new operating rooms (one complex operating room for specialty cases, one cardiovascular operating room, and four general operating rooms) on the third floor.
Because the nationally-ranked children’s surgery center provides care from infancy up to adulthood for primary care, subspecialties, and critical care, HGA wanted to create a space that would be efficient for staff as well as a calming and peaceful environment for young patients and their families. A brightly colored waiting room with a play area caters to the younger demographic and is designed to make the waiting process easier.
The hospital design draws on elements from the surrounding areas, such as flowing patterns in the flooring designed to mimic the Sacramento River. Circular patterns and shapes were utilized for their proven ability to have a calming effect and provide a positive distraction for the viewer.
To support its role as a teaching hospital, the facility features live-video feeds from operating rooms and advanced technologies. Collaboration rooms with the live feeds allow students to learn without actually being present in the operating room.
