From the first glimpse of the art and branding, to the soft and diffused natural daylight behind a friendly face in the greeter area, each step has a purpose in the overall path to healing.

Norton Neuroscience Institute: There was a great deal of thought for staff and patients to meet each other where they are—whether that means chatting, checking in digitally, or being able to sit down and have a conversation. The hub becomes the center of the clinical community and the start to the journey to come.

Norton Neuroscience Institute: Patients arriving are greeted by murals that started as medical scans. A neurosurgeon provided the design team with several brain and spine scans, and designers turned them into vibrant images used for digitally printed wall murals as well as smaller framed artwork throughout the space.

Norton Neuroscience Institute: The art supports the vision of creating a space that engages and educates. The design team artistically altered medical scans to create vibrant wall murals that add a museum-feel to the space. Like a museum, the art can be continuously curated to reflect the patient and clinical journey as the institute evolves over time.

Norton Neuroscience Institute: The smaller artwork throughout the clinical space ties to the larger format work in the public hub. The connection of these interweaves the journey and the culture of both patient and clinical staff. The images reaffirm the staff’s dedication to the craft and quality of care to the neurosciences.

Norton Neuroscience Institute: The fourth floor provides the ancillary services to create the components that truly make the institute comprehensive. Pain management, a significant component to many neuro patients, is located off the main lobby of the fourth floor.

Norton Neuroscience Institute: A critical component of the project is the Cressman Rehabilitation Center, a large patient rehab space. Windows flood the space with natural light to support recovery, while exposed ceilings help diffuse the natural daylight more evenly across the clinical environment.

Norton Neuroscience Institute: Giving the patient and clinical staff the space to have state of the art equipment and holistically treat the entire person as part of their neuroscience journey. From relearning to walk, to managing the variety of mobility and cognitive issues, the space connects the outside world providing the patient the motivation to redefine their new normal
Architectural firm DesignGroup (Columbus, Ohio) collaborated with Norton Healthcare in Louisville, Ky., to create the Norton Neuroscience Institute (NNI). The goal was to deliver a comprehensive clinical space dedicated to the health of the brain.
The 47,000-square-foot project comprises two floors in an existing medical office building. The idea of a one-stop-shop transformed into a center hub and adjacent spoke departments.
The center hub simplifies wayfinding with a greeter at entry. The third floor is dedicated to subspecialty clinics with 55 exam rooms. The fourth floor houses the Cressman Neurological Rehabilitation center, a multidisciplinary clinic comprised of the neurodiagnostic services, pain management, and the Norton Neuroscience Institute Resource Center.
Opened in May 2021, NNI evokes a feeling of calm and relaxation through ample natural light and conversational seating clusters. Neuro-inspired artwork and interactive design elements offer a high-tech and museum-like factor.
Using wider corridors between each clinical pod allows for ease of access to the exam rooms, given the mobility issues of the users, as well as allows for more natural light to spill in from the exterior.
Staff spaces are organized at the perimeters of the clinical spaces, giving them freedom to collaborate and share resources across different centers. Staff spaces leverage furniture solutions for maximum flexibility. Additionally, spaces are planned for focused work as well as collaborative work.
