Sunnyhill Pediatric Clinic, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Sunnyhill Pediatric Clinic in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is designed to reduce anxiety, foster trust, and deliver high-quality care at every stage of a child’s care and development.
Owner and Pediatrician Dr. Christopher Lever worked with interior design firm Holland Licensed Interior Design (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) on the overall design. The design takes a soft, playful approach, using colors including light blue and yellow, muted green, and sienna. Rounded forms, and custom upholstery in the staff cafe and reception arena add a softer touch, while custom ceiling clouds, and materials including cotton upholstery, laminate, wood-based, and metal panels make the space feel more approachable.
To meet a range of patient and staff needs, the space incorporates flowing layouts by featuring open corridors with arched doorways to exam rooms, as well as cartoon-style wayfinding signage to help children navigate the space independently.
Interior design strategies for pediatric outpatient facilities
Additionally, playful illustrations such as smiley faces and suns align the corridors. Durable, tactile materials and finishes, such as luxury vinyl tile flooring and laminate millwork in the staff café and exam rooms, balance clinical cleanliness with a warm, residential feel.
In high-traffic public areas such as reception, rounded furniture supports physical safety by minimizing sharp edges. Simple touches including child-height coat hooks in the reception entry encourage independence and make the space more accessible for young visitors.
Together, these features create a sense of approachability and play that helps deliver a clinical experience that feels thoughtful, safe, and welcoming.
