University of Iowa (UI) Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital opened a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Iowa City, Iowa, according to a news release.

An expansion of the hospital’s existing NICU, the new unit was built on the seventh floor, which previously was shell space. The project adds 32 NICU beds, family waiting areas, clinician workspaces and dedicated support services, including a centralized station for milk and formula mixing.

The Level 7 opening marks the first phase of a two-part expansion that will increase the hospital’s capacity to care for premature and critically ill newborns. A second NICU build-out on Level 8 is expected to be completed later in 2026.
