MUSC Health and Clemson University Student Medical and Research Facility, Clemson, South Carolina
MUSC Health (Charleston, S.C.), the clinical enterprise of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and Clemson University are partnering to expand access to comprehensive healthcare services for university staff and students with a new 90,000-square-foot medical facility on Clemson’s main campus in Clemson, S.C.
Designed by McMillan Pazdan Smith Architects (Charleston, S.C.) and Perkins&Will (Atlanta), the 3-story complex replaces the existing Redfern Student Health Center, which was built in 1969.
Slated for completion in fall 2027, the new outpatient facility expands Clemson’s medical, counseling, and psychological services with increased space for student health and wellness, including a pharmacy, lab, MRI suite, allergy and immunization clinic, and telehealth services. The facility also provides employee and occupational health services, advanced imaging, a sports medicine clinic, and human performance research center.
Sustainable design strategies for healthcare clinics
The project is pursuing Green Globes Certification from the Green Building Initiative (GBI). The building utilizes high-efficiency rooftop HVAC equipment coupled with high-efficiency plumbing systems to reduce both energy and water usage.
Additionally, RMF Engineering (Charleston, S.C.), which is providing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering design services, is coordinating with the architect and structural team to plan infrastructure and equipment layouts that enable a seamless future fit-out of an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) on the third level. The ASC will be operated by Prisma Health (Greenville, S.C.) Blue Ridge Orthopedics in partnership with MUSC.
