Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center, Miami
The Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center in Miami represents a partnership between Florida International University (FIU; Miami) and Baptist Health South Florida (Coral Gables, Fla.), bringing together patient care, education, and research under one roof.
Funded through a $158 million State of Florida appropriation, the 7-story, 163,000-square-foot building will be the university’s first on-campus academic medical facility. The center will support interprofessional training across FIU’s nursing, physician assistant, occupational therapy, and other allied health programs.
Integrating outpatient care with medical education
Dedicated learning spaces for medical students and residents will be integrated alongside outpatient services, including multispecialty care, diagnostic imaging, same-day surgery, infusion therapy, and a retail pharmacy.
Expected to open in 2028, the project aims to address Florida’s projected physician shortage by expanding medical education, clinical training, and healthcare access in the community.
AI-driven planning strategies, flexible learning environments
The project team, including Stantec (Miami and Philadelphia), is incorporating artificial intelligence-driven planning strategies while designing flexible learning environments with lounge areas and teaching alcoves embedded throughout the clinical floors.
