In an effort to expand outpatient access and relieve pressure on its main hospital surgical platform, Bellin Health (Green Bay, Wis.) developed a new 256,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center in Green Bay, Wis.
The Bellin Health Surgery & Specialty Center, completed in January 2025 and submitted to the 2026 Healthcare Design Showcase by HGA (Milwaukee), consolidates a broad range of outpatient services into a single multispecialty destination.
Universal clinic design for a multispecialty outpatient center
A universal clinic model anchors the facility’s design. Roughly 90 percent of each clinic floor plate is standardized from level to level, with 10 percent reserved as flexible space for imaging or specialty rooms. This strategy allowed the project team to proceed with design and construction while still determining which specialties would be included.
On the surgical side, universal prep/recovery rooms and operating rooms support a seamless continuum of care and the appropriate case mix. Universal design also adds familiarity for patient navigation and creates a flexible infrastructure for any future service line changes.
Biophilic lobby design shapes the patient arrival experience
The 2-story lobby connects major program elements and brings daylight into the heart of the building, where a mix of seating and gathering areas allows for working and waiting.
Biophilic elements, including sculpted birch trees, custom planters with integrated seating, and outdoor views, deliver a restorative, nature-connected arrival experience.
Showcase jurors appreciated the lobby for establishing a year-round central hub, with one saying, “It feels more like a community space than a waiting area.”
The Surgery & Specialty Center’s modern, hospitality-inspired aesthetic contrasts rich, dark floors against light wood and colorful accent walls. The refined palette continues into extended-stay rooms, which judges praised for looking “more like hotel rooms than clinical spaces,” with large windows and high-end touches such as wall sconces and textured wallpaper.
