Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS; Springfield, Ill.) celebrated the opening of its expanded neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital in Springfield.

Phase 1 of the project included doubling the size of the NICU to 36,500 square feet with 56 beds including private rooms, twin rooms or semi-private rooms, couplet care rooms, and pod concept with four beds; a tiny baby sub-unit; and a milk lab. A dedicated family respite lounge and overnight sleep suites will be added as part of phase 2, which is expected to open later this year.

Kahler Slater (Chicago) provided the architecture, interior design, and environmental branding for the project.
