Located in Cedars-Sinai’s existing Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion building in Los Angeles, the Outpatient Surgery Suite is a new 45,000-square-foot tenant-improvement project on Level 4. This suite includes 13 operating rooms (ORs), 16 pre-op stations, 17 post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) stations, sterile processing, and associated support spaces.

The new facility fulfilled several objectives. First was enhancing the care environment for patients, partly by integrating advanced technology into the new OR suites. Operational efficiency is also improved by consolidating the hospital’s number of surgical sites of service. Finally, the new pavilion frees up existing surgery space at Cedars-Sinai for other needs.

Using lighting as a main design element, CO Architects (Los Angeles) employed natural and artificial strategies to create a healing, relaxing environment. Upon entering the fourth floor, patients and visitors are greeted by a reception desk under a starry-sky ceiling. In the waiting room, a clerestory window adds sunlight.

Natural light is most evident in the pre- and post-surgery areas. As patients enter pre-surgery, daylight filters through clerestory windows above the medical headwall units. Surgeons and patients enter the ORs from a perimeter corridor, which streams natural light into the ORs through windows in the scrub area. Each 500-square-foot OR is designed with technology that allows surgical procedures to be broadcast within the building or around the world.

As part of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s surgical master plan, the new outpatient suite is dedicated to multiple specialties. It brings together the complex technical and functional requirements of a healthcare project with calming environments that are dignified for patients, visitors, and staff.
