Wesley Rehabilitation Center, Wichita, Kansas
The Wesley Rehabilitation Center, part of Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kan., provides essential rehabilitation services in Wichita, where a shortage of patient beds forced many patients to travel long distances for care.
Opened in October 2024, the new center now fills this gap with 24-hour rehabilitation nursing care, as well as comprehensive physical, occupational, speech, and language therapies. It also serves as one of the few inpatient rehabilitation facilities in central Kansas.
Designed by architectural design firm Barge Design Solutions (Nashville, Tenn.), the 49,072-square-foot facility showcases a modern, patient-centered design that seamlessly balances efficiency and comfort. Layouts are designed to support patients’ care goals, including distance markers embedded into the flooring to help support patients learning to walk again.
Key elements for patient wellness
Elements of the healing environment include expansive window glazing, floor-to-ceiling windows, and strategically placed light pockets throughout the facility to maximize natural light.
Additionally, patient rooms, hallways, workstations, and the dining area offer exterior views while large windows in the back corridor help activate the space and provide respite nooks for patients and families.
A key amenity space is the central courtyard, a multifunctional space designed for patient rehabilitation as well as a relaxing outdoor area for family and staff. The courtyard has a variety of textures in key areas to give newly ambulatory patients the opportunity to practice walking on various surfaces under medical supervision.
