Angela Kolosky, AIA, ACHA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, principal, healthcare planning market leader, DesignGroup (Columbus, Ohio)
As a principal and healthcare planning market leader at DesignGroup (Columbus, Ohio), Angela Kolosky works with a variety of clients from rural hospitals to large academic medical institutions, facilitating planning and design discussions as well as early strategic decision-making.
Armed with this broad range of experience and expertise, Kolosky aims to apply the same innovative design thinking to all scales of projects, ensuring rural and community hospitals receive the same strategic focus and design rigor as major academic institutions.
Specifically, over the past 18 months, Kolosky led planning and design efforts on two projects for OhioHealth (Columbus, Ohio). The first was a highly complex 15,000-square-foot renovation of the surgical and sterile processing department at one of the health system’s smallest community hospitals, O’Bleness Hospital in Athens, Ohio.
Working within the existing footprint, she challenged the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) team to develop phasing options early and collaborated with clinical staff to modernize the 1970s-era facility without disrupting operations. Kolosky’s engagement with hospital leadership and the surgical team ensured that a state-of-the-art surgical suite could be delivered to allow complex procedures to be performed on-site, bringing much-needed care closer to its rural population.
Additionally, she served as lead planner on a 272,000-square-foot expansion at Dublin Methodist Hospital in Dublin, Ohio, the facility’s largest addition and renovation project to date. Leading the team of stakeholders, she focused on how to allow the hospital to continue to expand its size and services while maintaining efficient staff operations and the same community-focused healthcare feel that patients have come to expect.
In one key design feature, Kolosky worked with hospital and clinical leadership to create a comprehensive surgical and procedural platform with heart care on a single floor, capitalizing on space efficiencies and improving the patient care experience. To confirm that all clinical needs were met, she led flow mapping exercises and real-world test runs to ensure optimal clinical operations in the new design.
Kolosky forms trusted relationships with her clients and translates complex clinical needs into clear, visual concepts to help support clinicians’ decision-making. Beyond her project work, she’s an active member of the American College of Healthcare Architects’ Communications and Outreach Committee. Kolosky also developed a “Healthcare 101 Education Series” to support career development for professionals interested in healthcare planning.
By integrating best-practice operational models with the realities of large healthcare systems and rural healthcare, Kolosky is helping systems overcome challenges, enhance patient flow, and improve care environments for communities reliant on limited resources.
