Henry Ford Hospital held a topping-out ceremony to place the final steel structural support beam for its new patient tower in Detroit, according to a news release.

The 20-story tower will house 432 private patient rooms, with five floors dedicated to specialized intensive care units (ICUs), as well as 28 new operating suites and a 75,000-square-foot emergency department (ED) with 100 treatment spaces. The new ED will also feature fast-track care for low-acuity patients and a dedicated behavioral health area.

The top three floors of the tower will house a 72-bed physical medicine and rehabilitation facility operated by Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (Chicago).

The tower is part of a $2.2 billion project called “Destination: Grand,” which includes a shared services building with a kitchen, pharmacy, and lab; a 1,500-space parking garage; and an all-electric central energy hub.

Barton Malow Construction (Southfield, Mich.), Turner Construction (Detroit), and Dixon Construction (Detroit) are building the tower, which is expected to open in 2027. The broader project is on track to be completed in 2029.
