BSA LifeStructures recognizes a tangible relationship between the physical design of healthcare facilities and the healing that takes place within them.

By leveraging national expertise gained through hundreds of healthcare projects, the firm integrates innovative practices in a collaborative process to advance healthcare design. The result is facilities where learning is intuitive, diagnosis and treatment are accelerated, and care-team communication is enhanced; facilities where patients feel better and heal faster.

In some cases, improved outcomes start with more effective training. For example, Indiana University School of Medicine, the Indiana School of Nursing and Clarian Health collaborated with BSA LifeStructures to create an experiential learning facility. In this interdisciplinary simulation center, students and medical staff will experience hands-on, simulation-based training in an advanced environment that replicates current hospital design.

Also important, BSA LifeStructures incorporates the healing power of natural environments into its designs—from tranquil gardens and interior landscapes, to a planet-friendly focus on sustainability and LEED-certified facilities. At Woodlawn Hospital, a 42,100-square-foot addition will focus on preserving and integrating the surrounding natural environment with improved indoor air quality, energy savings, and a green roof.

Design decisions reflect the principles of evidence-based design. Impact—from improved patient safety, to increased caregiver retention, to higher patient satisfaction—is measured using trademarked LifeStructures Metrics. Today, BSA LifeStructures’ healthcare designers work collaboratively with clients to develop lasting solutions that advance the client’s business mission and create inspired solutions that improve lives.

“Contributing to the care of human kind, to the efficient allocation of society’s resources, and to the quality of the built environment.”

HOK Health Care works with academic clinicians who are defining the future of care delivery and charting the course of discovery. As a result, we bring this learned expertise to every healthcare project that we undertake across the world.

When we think about design at HOK, we think about beauty, sustainability, and the communicative power of our designs. But we also think about how our buildings function. This requires more than a familiarity with the business of our clients. It requires thought leadership. In healthcare design, this means understanding where scientific progress is leading the care experience, and developing the financial, programmatic, and organizational responses to those changes. The facilities that result from this thought leadership look different, the experience of patients and their families are different, and the care delivered is the best available.

Do you suppose it’s a coincidence that the best healthcare designers have healthy outlooks toward life? These people work on complex projects—buildings that enhance, enrich, and save lives. These facilities can’t just satisfy users. They have to engage them, ease their tensions, and soothe their souls. Of course, they also have to meet operational objectives too. Kahn’s designers understand that creating a truly patient-centered environment doesn’t happen by accident. It also takes research, exploration, and a lot of planning. By skillfully blending design processes with business analytics, we work side-by-side with clients to create environments that both perform and inspire.
