Ten years ago, we set out to do something different in the sphere of professional awards programs. Instead of compiling a list of who’s who in healthcare design, we strove to go deeper.

We knew there were myriad individuals working tirelessly to improve care environments for patients, families, and staff, those who were driven by a mission to evolve what design can and should be. We also knew they were present across all segments of our industry, contributing individual layers of expertise to compose each project’s whole—and we wanted to celebrate all of that hard work. And so was born The HCD 10, recognizing outstanding accomplishments across 10 categories of nominees, from educator to researcher to architect to owner. Since that time, it’s been an honor to share the stories of our winners and their contributions to the field, and this year is certainly no exception.

In a time unlike any we’ve seen before, this industry—as one would expect—has stepped forward to support sweeping efforts in pandemic response. In fact, one nominee’s efforts to lead this industry as well as the greater architectural community in that pursuit were so impressive that we added a one-time-only category of Industry MVP—establishing our 10th annual class of winners as “The HCD 10, plus one.”

Beyond COVID-19, the standouts you’ll meet on the following pages delivered on inspiring endeavors with far-reaching impacts tied to sustainability, resiliency, community health, and operational efficiency.  Enjoy this special coverage, including personal insights on industry trends and lessons learned that are shared by our winners. Congratulations to all!
