Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Hospital is on track to open this fall in Northville Township, Mich., according to the Detroit Free Press.
The $384 million, state-run facility will house 264 inpatient beds—192 for adults and 72 for children and adolescents—in 198 single-occupancy and 33 double-occupancy rooms in a 410,000-square-foot building.
The project replaces Walter Reuther Psychiatric Hospital, which will close once patients are transferred to the new hospital, and increases the state’s psychiatric patient capacity by 54 beds.
The facility is being built on a 45-acre site that previously was home to Hawthorn Center, a state-run inpatient psychiatric hospital for children that closed in 2023 and was demolished to make way for the new development.
Amenities at the hospital will include a gym, adult education space, school for children and teens, commercial kitchen, music room, horticulture room, hair salon, dental suite, chapel, pharmacy, and two libraries. In addition, 12 secure courtyards will offer access to the outdoors.
The facility will be heated and cooled with 352 geothermal wells built beneath the parking lot.
The Christman Company (Lansing, Mich.) is serving as the project’s general contractor.
