PHOTO TOUR: Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City
Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had been operating for more than 30 years when the time for transition to an upgraded facility became necessary. The result of a 10-year renovation project is a 3.2 million-square-foot hospital that’s one of the largest in the country.
Working with owner Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, Stantec created a design that inspires comfort and tranquility. The campus reflects a “helping hand” with four bed towers and medical office building to represent a hand.
The towers, situated along thoughtfully planned landscaping, feature patient rooms with large windows that offer daylight and beautiful views. Rooftop gardens provides access to space for respite.
The hospital has space for 732 beds distributed across three wards as post-surgical inpatient beds, maternal and child health beds (including 12 VIP), medical intensive care unit (MICU) beds, cardiac ICU beds, surgical ICU beds, burn unit beds, and neonatal ICU beds.
Designated floors cater to patients looking for additional privacy and attention, with two presidential suites and 36 VIP suites. An initial staff of 3,000 medical professionals provides care for patients of all ages.
